The pumpkin is also called “pumpkin”, and it’s a berry fruit from the plant Cucurbita, which has its scientific name. This species comes in many different varieties, and their presentation is also varied.

There is no one best type, but studies have shown that regular consumption of all of these varieties has health benefits. It is particularly credited with:

The giant pumpkin is a popular variety around the globe. The giant pumpkin is indigenous to temperate zones in South America, and it is grown primarily in Brazil. The largest ones weigh between 40-50 kilos. It available in different sizes. They are also known as “sweet potatoes squash” or “guards squash.”

They are used to prepare savoury dishes such as purees and soups. The popular Halloween lamp is made from them.

Cucurbita maxima (Turban or Turkish squash)

The turban pumpkin is also included in the giant pumpkins. Because they resemble them, these squashes are also called “Aladdin,” “mushroom,” and “pumpkin with Mexican Hat.” The weight of this type can reach 1.5 kilograms, and its unique shape makes it a popular decorative item.

The pulp is firm, crisp, and mildly flavoured. It can be used to make creams or purees. It yields less than other varieties because of the holes.

Anco squash (Cucurbita moschata)

Anco squash includes varieties such as long-necked squash, anquito squash and anco. This variety has skin that is usually orange or green with spots.

It can be eaten with the skin or as a base for pizzas or lasagnas. The pulp of the fruit can also be used in puddings, jams, and tortillas.

Spaghetti Squash (Cucurbita Pepo Spaghetti)

Spaghetti squash, also known as creeping winter squash, is distinguished by its oval shape with peels of yellow or orange. The flesh inside is a light colour, almost white. It has small black seeds.

When it is cooked, the pulp turns into spaghetti-like strands, thus its name. It is, therefore, ideal for grilling with cheese, aromatic herbs, salt, pepper and butter.

Peanut Squash (Cucurbita Butternut)

The skin is a dull, orange colour. The pulp, on the other hand, is moist with a deep orange hue. The flavour is similar to peanuts, with a hint of nutmeg. It is, therefore, ideal for sweet creams and spreads as well as roasts.

Cayote or sweet squash (C cucurbit ficifolia).

The shell is oval and green with white or yellow mottling. Winter variety with a sweet taste. The meat is stringy, tender and juicy. It has a hollowed area where the seeds are located.

It is also used in the pastry industry to make jams and sweets.

All squashes are healthy.

Squash varieties vary in colour, texture, and flavour. They are all characterized by low-calorie and high nutritional content.
