ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2024: Chiba Mone leads women after Mihara Mai and Lee Hae-in fall

During the early portion of the 20th century, there were not many better than Sweden’s Salchow. He won gold at the 1908 Olympics in London (back when skating was held during the Summer Games), but his real claim to fame at the time were his 10 world championship gold medals in men’s singles. The latter is still a world record for men and shared with the great Sonja Henie and Irina Rodnina. OK, this will be the first of a few times we’ll take the liberty of offering a skating two for one.

  1. Dorothy Hamill was considered the iconic figure skater with the legendary wedge haircut and that infectious smile.
  2. She achieved the pinnacle of success by winning the gold medal at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics, becoming the first American woman to do so.
  3. A two-time Olympic champion (1948, ’52) and five-time world champ, Button was the youngest male skater to win Olympic gold (18 years, 202 days) and the only non-European competitor to win a European championship.
  4. There was skepticism Valieva was a victim of an institutional culture in Russian sports of doping and lack of duty of care to young athletes.

This was also the first time since 1980 she would lose the short program phase at a World Championship. To win, she would have needed the final skater, Chin, to place between her and Thomas in the famous ice skaters female long program, but this did not occur. She had been considering making the 1986 World Championships her final event, but stung by the loss, Witt vowed to regain her title and skate on to Calgary.

While still competing, Vinson Owen became the first female sportswriter at the New York Times. Her feat of nine U.S. ladies titles was later matched by Michelle Kwan. Vinson Owen died while traveling to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships when Sabena Flight 548 crashed just outside Brussels. In 1988, Witt started a professional career – rare for East German athletes. She spent three years on tour in the United States with Brian Boitano, also an Olympic champion. Their show, “Witt and Boitano Skating”, was so successful that for the first time in ten years, New York’s Madison Square Garden was sold out for an ice show.

She also was taking two oxygen-boosting medications not banned in sports. A Chicago native, Jeff Mezydlo has professionally written about sports, entertainment and pop culture for nearly 30 years. If he could do it again, he’d attend Degrassi Junior High, Ampipe High and Grand Lakes University. “I was just disappointed in myself again because I know that I could have brought a bit more and trusted myself to do a bit more in that second half,” Glenn said. “To go from that, feeling like my success was slipping away, to realizing that I had it, it was a mixture of happiness, of course. This wasn’t exactly how I wanted to get my first national title but I’m incredibly thankful for it.” Her expressive performances and dynamic spins pushed the boundaries of the sport and captivated audiences worldwide.

Michelle Kwan

She won six consecutive European Championships (1983–1988), a feat only equalled by Sonja Henie among female skaters. Between 1984 and 1988, Witt won ten golds from eleven major international events, making her one of the most successful figure skaters. Dr. Tenley Albright, who was inducted into the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1983, is the 1956 Olympic champion, 1952 Olympic silver medalist, two-time World champion and five-time U.S. champion. Albright was the first American female figure skater to win an Olympic gold medal.

Amber Glenn becomes first LGBTQ+ woman to win U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Championship

The demoted Russians drop into third place, one point ahead of Canada even after being stripped of the points the then-15-year-old Valieva earned on the ice. She began skating at 5 and participated in her first figure-skating contest at 9. A Stanford engineer and a qualified orthopedic surgeon, too, Thomas surprisingly ended up being broke and began living in a trailer in the Appalachian mountains. Dorothy Hamill is a retired figure skater whose efforts gave the United States of America an Olympic gold at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Despite suffering from chronic depression for much of her adult life, Dorothy Hamill served as a mentor to Rachael Flatt, who won the gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Sato, who turns 20 next week, had put the pressure on his teammate with a brilliant short of his own, opening with a quad toe-triple toe and then landing the only quad Lutz of the men’s short.

Testing at a World Anti-Doping Agency-approved laboratory in Stockholm, Sweden, was delayed by staffing shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the Korean landed the Lutz a quarter under-rotated, before attempting the toe loop but failing to gain any lift, rotating on the ice for an invalid element. “It just feels like a homecoming every time I get to come back year after year. As far as my performance, I felt great out there. Obviously, it’s not ideal to start, you know, on your butt, but I love the fight to the end.” Her focus on artistry, musicality, and storytelling paved the way for future generations of skaters.

Witt and Sumners held the top two spots heading into the Olympic free skate, which was worth fifty percent of the total score. Witt landed three triple jumps in her free skate program, and the judges left room for Sumners to win the event. Sumners scaled back two of her jumps and Witt won the long program by one-tenth of a point on one judge’s scorecard. Witt won the gold medal aged 18 years and 77 days, becoming one of the youngest Olympic figure skating champions.

Kagiyama Yuma on his new coach, Carolina Kostner: ‘To skate like that has always been my goal’

He’s the only male skater to win Olympic gold with two different partners, first, with Natalia Mishkutionok at the 1992 Games in Albertvill and then in ’98 while teamed with Oksana Kazakova at Nagano. Dmitriev and Mishkutionok also took home silver at the ’94 Olympics in Lillehammer. She captured the hearts of the world and the gold medal at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics, becoming the last female skater to win without a triple jump. Renowned for her powerful skating jumps and spins, she was among the first female skaters to land the double axel, pushing the technical boundaries of the sport. The Olympic silver medallist was brilliant as the final skater in the men’s short program after strong performances from Sato, Cha and others in the final group in Shanghai.

In pairs, Canada’s Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps lead with a 69.48, four points ahead of reigning world champs Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi (65.61), who were on competitive ice for the first time since September. The unprecedented turmoil of canceling the medal ceremony at the Olympics has tested the rules of figure skating’s team event, which debuted at the 2014 Sochi Games. The Russians and Canadians traded gold and silver at the first two editions. The Americans moved into the gold medal position in the team event and Japan has been upgraded to silver from bronze.

She was expected to be in a fierce three-person fight for only two spots on the German Olympic team with both young rising star Tanja Szewczenko and veteran Marina Kielmann, who was almost the same age as Witt. She finished second at the German Championships behind Szewczenko, but above Kielmann. She and Szewczenko thus gained the two available spots ahead of Kielmann for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, where she finished seventh. In a dramatic buildup, she would also draw last to skate, and get to close the show in her final Olympic skate, after the medalists had already been determined. Her free program to the music “Sag mir wo die Blumen sind” (an arrangement of the Pete Seeger folksong “Where Have All the Flowers Gone”) included a peace message for the people of Sarajevo, the site of her first Olympic victory.

The IOC executive board will next meet from March in Lausanne, at the same time Canada hosts the figure skating world championships in Montreal. GENEVA (AP) — Despite the disqualification of Kamila Valieva in a doping case, the Russian figure skating team still stands to finish on the podium and get bronze medals from the 2022 Beijing Olympics behind the United States and Japan. In 1976, the creative and supremely talented Curry won gold at both the Olympics and the world championships.

Glenn’s victory makes her the first openly LGBTQ+ skater to win the U.S. women’s title. She achieved the pinnacle of success by winning the gold medal at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics, becoming the first American woman to do so. Her performance, particularly her signature spiral, was a masterpiece of elegance and precision, etched forever in figure skating history. Figure Skating Hall of Fame as a singles skater, pairs skater and a coach. In 1988, Witt won her sixth consecutive European Championship, equaling the achievement of Sonja Henie as the most-successful skater in ladies’ singles at the European Championships. Both Witt’s and Henie’s number of European titles have since been surpassed by Irina Slutskaya, but Witt retains the record for most consecutive European titles, sharing it with Henie.

Greatest US Female Figure Skaters Of All Time

Canada’s overall point total remained at 53 while the Russians’ tally dropped from 74 to 54 — enough for the bronze medals for everyone on the team except the disqualified Valieva. “Skate Canada strongly disagrees with the ISU’s position on this matter and will consider all options to appeal this decision,” the country’s figure skating body said in a statement Tuesday. The International Skating Union published an amended standings from the Beijing competition on Tuesday that removed Valieva’s maximum 10 points from each of her two events but did not add an extra point to the other teams below her. Mihara, who won the Four Continents title in 2022 and the Grand Prix Final last season, has battled a right ankle injury this season and has only competed internationally once, at the NHK Trophy. The Lutz was landed a quarter rotation under-rotated before she fell on the under-rotated toe loop. Mihara posted the highest program component score for artistry and choreography of all 26 competitors (32.54) but is down in fifth after struggling on her triple Lutz-triple toe combination.
